Builder throws hand grenade onto train tracks near Whitstable
Police have sealed off an area in Whitstable after a hand grenade was reportedly found near the railway station. The incident occurred when a contractor, upon discovering the suspected grenade at a building site, panicked and threw it onto the nearby railway tracks.
Immediate Response to the Hand Grenade
Fortunately, the hand grenade did not detonate, and no injuries were reported. Police swiftly cordoned off the area surrounding the station, while a bomb disposal team from the Ministry of Defence was deployed to assess and safely remove the device.
Workers at the scene stated that they had initially unearthed the grenade while digging. One builder, unsure of what to do, scooped it up with a shovel and flung it near the tracks in an attempt to move it away from the construction site. Although the device did not land directly on the railway line, its proximity led to immediate safety measures being implemented.
UXO Risks on Construction Sites
This incident highlights the very real risks that unexploded ordnance (UXO) poses to construction projects across the UK. With an estimated 10% of wartime munitions failing to explode, buried UXO remains a significant hazard, particularly in areas with historical military activity.
Failing to properly manage UXO risks can result in severe project delays, safety hazards, and costly emergency responses. In situations like this, correct protocol is crucial – handling or moving suspected ordnance can be extremely dangerous.
