UXO Search and Clear_
At Brimstone, our UXO Search and Clear service provides a meticulous, thorough approach to identifying and removing potential unexploded ordnance hazards.
Using advanced search equipment and techniques, we can quickly mark, excavate and identify targets in real-time, keeping projects moving along swiftly.
What is a UXO Search and Clear_
A UXO Search and Clear is where our UXO engineers use specialist search equipment to mark, excavate and identify targets in real-time. This is achieved by establishing picketed areas in the pre-determined at-risk zone and systematically clearing lanes down to 0.75 metres.
This methodology is suitable for greenfield sites or areas of made ground that have low levels of metal contamination. This service would usually only be recommended in certain circumstances, and when other UXO risk mitigation options are not suitable. For example, we often find this is a cost effective solution for clients who are undertaking shallow excavations or laying cable routes.
Benefits of a UXO Search and Clear_
Implementing a UXO Search and Clear offers several advantages:
A UXO Search and Clear ensures potential UXO risks are identified and addressed, allowing your project to proceed smoothly without the fear of unexpected ordnance encounters.
While there isn’t legislation in the UK outlining the steps you must take to check for UXO before construction work, there are legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 to ensure the safety of your employees.
There is also CIRIA C681, an industry guide for the management of risks associated with unexploded ordnance. The guidance is split into four sections: Preliminary UXO Risk Assessment, Detailed UXO Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation and Implementation. We always recommend our clients follow the CIRIA C681 guidance, which enables you to reduce the risk of an unexpected UXO encounter.
While some of our other equipment can only search for metals containing iron, the specialised equipment we use in a UXO Search and Clear can find both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including aluminium (found in detonators) and brass (found in fuzes).
What happens if UXO is found_
If our UXO engineer identifies an item of UXO on site, they will immediately notify the site manager and ensure the area is evacuated. The engineer will then call the police to notify them of the find and, if safe to do so, will take photos of the object.
While Brimstone has the licenses and capability to dispose of items of ordnance, we initially lean on the resources provided by the police and British military to keep costs as low as possible for clients. However, if required, Brimstone can dispose of items found on site for clients.
Depending on your proposed work, a ‘search and mark’ strategy might be a suitable alternative to excavating and removing targets.
