We kicked off 2023 with an incredible level of activity, with our engineers visiting 25–35 sites every single week. From in-depth UXO risk assessments to large-scale clearance operations, January set the pace for what promises to be a big year ahead for the Brimstone UXO team.

Hitting the ground running

After a well-earned break, we returned refreshed and ready for action. Throughout January, our teams have been hard at work on a diverse range of projects across the UK.

Extensive UXO clearance at former MOD Sites
We’ve continued large-scale UXO clearance on former Ministry of Defence (MoD) firing ranges, detecting, recovering, and safely disposing of a wide variety of unexploded ordnance (UXO). These complex operations require precision and expertise, as they involve working in environments heavily contaminated by historical military activity.

Our teams are using advanced detection methods to systematically clear practice bombs, projectiles, and other UXO remnants, making these sites safer for future use. With each successful clearance, we are reducing the risks posed by legacy munitions and helping to unlock previously unusable land.

Intrusive surveys in the North West
Elsewhere, we’ve been conducting intrusive UXO surveys in the North West ahead of piling activities on construction sites. These surveys are a vital part of pre-construction safety measures, helping to identify any potential UXO hazards before ground disturbance occurs.

Our specialist rigs, equipped with high-precision magnetometry, are deployed to detect subsurface anomalies. If our geophysicists determine that the data indicates a possible UXO, we immediately move to the next stage of investigation, ensuring that no hidden risks are left unaddressed.

Risk assessments across 160,000+ hectares
In parallel with our fieldwork, we’ve been delivering UXO risk assessments covering more than 160,000 hectares of land across the UK’s defence training establishments.

These assessments involve in-depth historical research, geophysical data analysis, and expert evaluation to determine the likelihood of UXO contamination. By providing detailed risk profiles, we empower clients to make informed decisions about land use and development, ensuring both safety and compliance.

Overcoming Winter Challenges with Cutting-Edge Technology

Winter brings its own set of challenges, with unpredictable weather conditions, strong winds, and frozen ground. However, there are no snow days for Brimstone UXO – our operations continue, thanks to the latest technology and our experienced field teams.

Intrusive surveys in all conditions
Our crawler-mounted rigs are built to handle tough winter terrain. Equipped with durable tracks, they can navigate icy, muddy, and frost-bitten surfaces with ease. The rigs use hydraulic pressure to drive a cone into the ground, collecting data from the surrounding soil to identify potential UXO threats.

Non-intrusive drone surveys
In addition to traditional ground-based methods, we’re also using cutting-edge drone technology to conduct non-intrusive UXO surveys.

Our JUNO UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is equipped with powerful sensors and detectors, allowing us to survey difficult-to-reach locations quickly and efficiently. JUNO can operate in a range of weather conditions, including light rain, wind, and low temperatures. This innovative aerial surveying capability provides rapid, cost-effective UXO detection while minimising disruption to the environment.

Brimstone UXO 2023

Sustainability and innovation in 2023

At Brimstone UXO, we’re not just focused on the work in the field – we’re also committed to sustainable business practices and ongoing innovation.

Reducing our carbon footprint
Since becoming carbon neutral in June 2022 through our partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain™, we’ve continued to seek ways to reduce our environmental impact. In 2023, we are implementing new eco-friendly measures, including further reducing waste, optimising transportation routes, and enhancing the efficiency of our operations.

Expanding our services
This year, we also plan to introduce new services alongside our core UXO risk mitigation solutions. While we can’t reveal all the details just yet, expect to see exciting developments as we continue to expand our capabilities to meet the evolving needs of our clients.

Looking ahead: what’s next for Brimstone UXO?

With such a dynamic start to the year, we are excited for what lies ahead in 2023. Our teams will continue working on major UXO clearance projects, delivering risk assessments, and providing expert support to the construction, infrastructure, and defence sectors.

We’re also preparing for key industry events, where we’ll share insights into UXO risk mitigation and connect with clients and partners. Keep an eye on our channels for upcoming event announcements and company news.

If you’re planning a project that involves ground disturbance or have concerns about potential UXO risks, Brimstone UXO is here to help.
