An area of Hornsea has been cordoned off following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance (UXO) near Long Beach caravan park. Authorities were alerted to the device earlier today, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists.

RAF Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team On Route

A specialist team from the RAF Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit is currently on its way to assess and safely deal with the device. Until their arrival and further assessment, a safety cordon remains in place to protect the public.

A spokesman for Bridlington Coastguard stated: “A bomb disposal team is on its way to the area, and we have the Hornsea Rescue Coastguard team on site. We are not sure what the item found is at this stage, but it isn’t unusual to find old explosive devices around there.”

Humberside Specials also issued a public update on social media, saying: “Cordon in place with @HornseaCG due to found unexploded ordnance.”

Historic Context: Why UXO Is Common in Hornsea

The coastline around Hornsea and Mappleton has a long history of military activity. During the Second World War, the cliffs near RAF Cowden were extensively used for target practice, resulting in numerous pieces of unexploded ordnance remaining buried or washing up along the shoreline. Over the years, several UXO discoveries have been reported in the region, making such incidents relatively common.

While the exact nature of the device found today is yet to be confirmed, this serves as a strong reminder of the lasting impact of wartime activities on the UK’s coastal areas.

Public Safety Measures

Authorities have advised people to stay clear of the cordoned-off area and to report any suspicious objects they come across to the police or Coastguard immediately. While no evacuations from the caravan park have been necessary, the situation is being closely monitored to ensure public safety.
