Residents evacuated after possible World War One bomb taken into pub

Residents have been evacuated from their homes after a possible World War One bomb was discovered last night.

South Wales Police said they were called at around 7.25pm on Wednesday after receiving a report of what appeared to be a World War One bomb at the Pink Geranium pub in Pontardawe.

It is understood that the device was taken into the pub and a police cordon was put in place.

Just before midnight police confirmed that the device had been removed by bomb disposal specialists and the area was declared safe.

South Wales Police said local residents had been evacuated from their homes as a precaution. A spokesman said: “Police cordoned off a road in the Pontardawe area of Swansea following a call received around 7.30pm that what is believed to be a World War One explosive device had been found at that location.”

“The device was isolated and a number of local residents were evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.”

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal were in attendance to make the device safe.”

Device removed by bomb disposal specialists

Just before midnight South Wales Police released this statement:

“We are able to confirm that the device found earlier in Pontardawe has now been removed by bomb disposal and the area declared safe. We would like to thank the public and local residents for their patience.”
