While every industry faces its own pressures, unexploded ordnance (UXO) presents a common challenge across many of them. From housing developments and infrastructure upgrades to international clearance projects, the presence of UXO has the potential to disrupt progress if not properly managed.

At Brimstone UXO, we work across these diverse sectors with one goal in mind: to help organisations move forward with confidence, knowing that UXO risks are understood, managed and, where necessary, mitigated by a specialist team with real-world experience.

Government and Defence | Supporting Strategic and Public Works

Our leadership and engineering teams include former British Army Ammunition Technicians and Royal Engineers, giving Brimstone a strong foundation in military and defence operations. That knowledge is critical when working on government projects involving training grounds, munitions storage areas, or legacy defence infrastructure.

Through our security clearance, we support a range of government-led and publicly funded projects, including:

  • UXO risk mitigation on former air weapons ranges and military sites.
  • UXO support for infrastructure upgrades on MOD land.
  • Clearance and inspection of areas earmarked for repurposing or public access.

These projects often involve close collaboration with local authorities, defence contractors or the MOD itself, requiring a balance of discretion, compliance, and technical competence.

Just a few examples of our work with Government organisations include:

  • Long term clearance of UXO from the former air weapons range, RAF Cowden, on the East Yorkshire coast.
  • UXO detection and mitigation across 13 hectares of land on an active firing range in Essex.
  • Collaboration with Plymouth City Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, and military partners on a sensitive Target Investigation in Millbay, Plymouth.
  • A 1,300 hectare UXO survey south of Vilnius, Lithuania, for a new military training ground.
  • Explosive ordnance clearance and conventional munitions disposal on two active air weapons ranges on the East coast.
  • Collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive to safely identify, extract, and dispose of over 3,500 items of UXO on a construction site in Staffordshire.
  • A 200-hectare UXO drone survey on a live military training ground in Dartmoor National Park.

Commercial Projects | Enabling Safe, Sustainable Development

Many commercial developments today are on land with a moderate or high UXO risk. Whether it’s a brownfield site in a city or undeveloped coastal land, these areas may contain buried munitions, posing a significant safety and financial risk.

Brimstone UXO works closely with clients in the commercial sector to identify, assess and manage these risks as efficiently and safely as possible. From football stadiums and energy recovery facilities to new build housing and solar farms, we have worked on thousands of commercial sites in the last few years.

Housing Developments

With growing pressure to deliver new homes across the UK, particularly on brownfield land or newly released ‘grey belt’ land, the UK house building sector is booming. However, UXO risks can often be overlooked until late in the process, leading to delays and unexpected costs.

We help residential developers understand site history early through Preliminary and Detailed UXO Risk Assessments, and provide on-site support when needed, including UXO supervision during excavations, surveying ahead of intrusive works and clearance operations where necessary.

Energy and Renewables

The UK’s shift towards a greener energy system is accelerating, with government targets driving major investment in wind, solar, and other low-carbon technologies.

We support energy clients with risk mitigation during piling, borehole drilling, dredging, and construction, ensuring safety is maintained without slowing down delivery.

Infrastructure and Civil Engineering

Major infrastructure projects such as rail upgrades, roads, ports and industrial sites often span land with unknown or poorly documented military use. Our intrusive surveys, combined with thorough desktop research and on-site supervision help civil engineering teams plan and work with confidence.

Retail, Leisure and Mixed-Use Developments

Urban expansion often brings retail parks, hotels, and leisure centres into areas once impacted by bombing or military activity, especially in cities heavily targeted during WWII.

We help developers assess risk early, maintain compliance with planning conditions, and keep construction timelines on track with minimal disruption.

Humanitarian and Charity Work | Supporting Global Clearance Efforts

UXO risk is a global issue, particularly in regions affected by historic conflict. In many of these areas, landmines, cluster munitions and other unexploded items still threaten lives, livelihoods and long-term development.

Brimstone UXO provides technical support and operational expertise to humanitarian clearance programmes and charitable organisations. Our teams work in line with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) and help deliver safe clearance, training and capacity-building in post-conflict environments.

This work is about more than removing ordnance. It’s about restoring land for agriculture, housing, and education, and helping communities rebuild with dignity and safety.

Two notable humanitarian projects we’ve been involved in in recent years include:

  • Delivering quality assurance in Israel in conjunction with The HALO Trust.
  • A UXO drone survey demonstration in Ukraine for the United Nations Development Programme.

A Flexible, Sector-Aware Approach

Whether we’re working with a local council on a playpark development, a developer building homes on a former RAF base, or a charity clearing land overseas, our approach is always the same: understand the risk, plan carefully, and carry out the work to the highest standards.

Our services, from risk assessments and surveys to clearance operations and on-site supervision, are designed to adapt to different sectors, environments and regulatory requirements.

We’re proud to support organisations across the commercial, governmental and humanitarian landscape — helping them move forward with confidence, whatever their goals.
