Bomb disposal experts were called to Watton, Norfolk, today after a grenade was discovered in a garage. The incident underscores the importance of professional unexploded ordnance (UXO) risk management and safe disposal practices.

Incident details

Norfolk Police were alerted at 9:56 am to reports of a grenade found on Saham Road. The Royal Air Force bomb disposal team arrived at the property around 2pm to assess the situation. The device, described as rusty, was carefully moved to a safe location where it was neutralised in a controlled explosion. By 3pm, the area had been declared safe, and the police cordon was removed.

A police spokesperson confirmed: “The area is now clear, and no further risk remains.”

UXO safety reminders

This incident highlights the risks posed by UXO, even decades after its initial use or abandonment. Grenades, bombs, and other ordnance can remain dangerous, particularly if they are disturbed. Members of the public are strongly advised:

  • Do not touch or move suspicious items.
  • Immediately report discoveries to the police.
  • Follow instructions from emergency services to ensure safety.
