A military smoke grenade found on the shores of the River Severn at Beachley Point has been safely disposed of, reinforcing the importance of public vigilance when encountering suspected unexploded ordnance (UXO).

Discovery and Response

The grenade was discovered below the high-water mark by the Chepstow Coastguard while conducting a routine search exercise. Upon identifying the object, the team immediately reported their findings to the Milford Haven Coastguard Operations Centre, ensuring a swift and coordinated response.

Richard Hoyle, Deputy Station Officer at Chepstow Coastguard Station, explained: “The object was located, and details were passed through to Milford Haven Coastguard Operations Centre.”

A Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was tasked with investigating the reported object, confirming its nature and assessing any potential risk.

EOD Investigation of the Smoke Grenade and Safety Measures

Following careful examination, the EOD team determined that the item was a military-specification smoke grenade. Fortunately, it was deemed non-viable, posing no immediate threat.

Mr Hoyle emphasised the significance of proper protocol when encountering potential ordnance: “The message is always, if you see something suspicious on the foreshore, don’t touch it and don’t pick it up. Just call 999.”

UXO Risks and Public Awareness

This discovery serves as an important reminder of the continued presence of unexploded ordnance across the UK, particularly in coastal and former military training areas. While many discoveries turn out to be inert or degraded over time, they should always be treated as potentially hazardous until assessed by professionals.

Beachgoers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts should remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects immediately to emergency services. The correct procedures ensure public safety and allow trained specialists to manage these findings appropriately.
