Controlled explosion of 30 Second World War bombs near Schiphol begins
Bomb disposal experts have commenced the meticulous clearance of 30 unexploded Second World War bombs from a field near Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. This operation highlights the lingering legacy of wartime conflict and the continued efforts required to ensure public safety.
The historical context
The site at Rijsenhout, located close to Schiphol Airport, served a unique purpose during the German occupation. Used as a decoy airfield, it was designed to mislead Allied bombers into targeting it instead of the actual military base at Schiphol. Over the years, the field has revealed a trove of unexploded munitions, most of which originated from German aircraft that dumped unused ordnance before returning to their home bases. This dangerous legacy has persisted for decades, buried just beneath the surface.
Safe disposal in progress
The operation, led by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) service, aims to clear the remaining bombs, which range in weight from 50kg to 500kg. In November, four bombs located closest to residential areas were safely detonated in controlled explosions. The remaining 26 bombs are scheduled for disposal by the end of the month.
To minimise disruption to the heavily trafficked airspace around Schiphol, the detonations have been carefully timed. “The explosions will take place during off-peak hours, and if necessary, aircraft will be able to circulate in safe waiting zones above the Netherlands,” explained an EOD spokesperson.
UXO risk management: a global challenge
This operation is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) worldwide. From construction sites to farmland, UXO continues to disrupt development projects and pose significant safety risks. Effective risk management and disposal of these hazardous remnants are crucial to ensuring the safety of communities and the success of projects.
